Few things are more powerful than the power of endurance.
I recently taught on Daniel in the lions’ den. This guy was amazing.
Despite years of living faithfully, he still faced some significant opposition more than halfway through his life.
Yet no matter how strong the opposition, Daniel managed to get through it.
In order to make it through the most difficult circumstances, it helps to anticipate these 4 obstacles to endurance:
#1 Fear: I’m more afraid of them than I am of God
The edict was clear: worship the king or be thrown in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). Daniel had to make a choice that you and I are called to make every single day: who are you going to fear? Will you live in the fear of man, or the fear of God? It would have been natural to fear the lions’ den, but Daniel was far more afraid of God than he was a bunch of lions. The result was his deliverance. Now you choose your fear.
#2 Frustration: Why is this happening to me?
You might be living in that frustrating place right now that can’t break out of the cycle of asking yourself: why is this happening to me? Instead of asking why, step back and ask God to show you what he is trying to do through this difficult circumstance. It could be that God is setting you up for the deliverance of a lifetime!
#3 Failure: I want what I want and I want it right now.
Many of us have failed so many times we dare not try again. We’ve caved into this mentality of short term gratification, and bending the rules to the point where we are too ashamed to come to God for help. We have allowed our failures in the past to dictate our future for God. Don’t! Where sin abounds God’s grace abounds even more! There is no sin so dark, nor past so broken that God can’t redeem!
#4 Fatigue: I’ve done my part, why isn’t God doing His?
Are you worn out? Tired? Over it all? I’ve been there before. I know how it feels. It’s like I’ve worked hard to do my part, now if only God would pull His weight in this equation! Lies like these are easier to buy into when you’re tired. What I love about God’s love is that He understands our fatigue and makes room for it. He feeds us when we’re hungry and He gives us second chances. Today you might just need to be reminded: God is at work even when it doesn’t feel like it. He’s doing it even when you don’t see it!
I read this the other day: “Difficulty is the atmosphere surrounding a miracle, yet if it is to be a great miracle, the surrounding condition will be not simply a difficulty but an utter impossibility.”
Deliverance is on the way. Don’t let the lions scare you!
